Notice of Vacancy on the Value Adjustment Board

The Volusia County Council is seeking applications from individuals who wish to serve as a citizen member of the Value Adjustment Board (VAB). This is a volunteer position and the successful appointee will serve without compensation or expense reimbursement. The appointment is for approximately one year, and the appointee may serve multiple terms by annual appointment of the county council.

The VAB considers and renders a decision on appeal petitions relating to property value assessments, classifications and exemptions. It is comprised of two members of the county council, one member of the school board, and two citizens. One citizen member is appointed by the County Council and one citizen member is appointed by the School Board.

Persons wishing to apply to serve on the Value Adjustment Board must meet the following qualifications:

  • Must own homestead property within Volusia County.
  • May not be a member or an employee of any taxing authority.
  • May not be a person who represents property owners in any administrative or judicial review of property taxes.
  • May not be an elected official, appointed state, county or municipal office holder, employee of county government or currently serving on a county advisory board.

The citizen member shall be appointed for a term commencing on April 1 of each year and ending at the conclusion of the last meeting of the Value Adjustment Board for that year. The VAB generally meets three to five times during the tax year, and each meeting is usually less than one hour. However, the time demands may vary depending upon the number of petitions filed and other factors that impact the appeal process.

If you are interested in serving on the Value Adjustment Board, a copy of the
application is available here. Interested persons should fill out the application form and return it to Marcy Zimmerman no later than June 13, 2008.
