How to become a Poll Worker in Volusia County, Florida

Prior to each election, the Supervisor of Elections is required to appoint Election Board members who serve at each of the precinct polling sites on Election Day.  Participating in elections by becoming a member of an Election Board is a way for you to express your commitment to your community and to the democratic process.

The Election Board
There are a number of position appointments for each Election Board:

The Clerk is the appointed manager for each precinct polling site and is responsible for seeing that the other members of the Election Board carry out their duties and responsibilities as required by law.  The Clerk has additional responsibilities prior to election day, to include staffing other members of the Election Team and assisting with the set up of their assigned precinct polling location.
Each precinct is assigned 1 Clerk.

The Assistant Clerk operates the voter assistance table and aids the precinct Clerk with verification of voters' eligibility, processing paperwork and answering voters' questions.  The Assistant Clerk must be able to step in and perform the duties of the Clerk should he or she become unavailable. 
Each precinct is assigned 1 Assistant Clerk.

The Precinct Register Inspector, after verifying a person's eligibility to vote and confirming they have proper identification, ensures that the precinct register is signed by the voter and instructs each person on the proper way to mark a ballot or use the accessible voting equipment. 
Each precinct is assigned 1-4 Register inspectors.

The Voting Equipment Inspector is responsible for maintaining the proper operation of voting equipment and assisting voters with the use of the equipment.
Each precinct is assigned 1 Equipment Inspector.

The Poll Deputy, although not a member of the Election Board plays an important role at the precinct polling site by maintaining good order.  The poll deputy is deputized by the Volusia County Sheriff.
Each precinct is assigned 1 Deputy.

To be an Election Board Member you must:

• Be a registered voter in Volusia County
• Be able to read and write English
• Be 18 years of age (or pre-registered at age 17)
• Attend mandatory training session(s) before each election
• Be available to work at the polling place from 6:00 a.m. until after the polls close at 7:00 p.m. (most work is completed by 8:30 p.m.)
• Deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner

Is this a volunteer position?

No. Poll workers are paid for their services. The rate of pay per election day ranges between $110 and $175, depending on the position held.  Although we do not pay for attending the orientation session, you will be paid $6.50/hour for attending the mandatory training classes.

When are the training classes held?

Florida election laws require that all poll workers attend training prior to each primary, general and special election. Class lengths vary according to the position and usually take place a month prior to the election.

How will I know if I have been selected?

If a position is available, you will be contacted by someone from the Department of Elections or the Election Board Clerk from a specific precinct. Once you agree to work, you will be notified in writing of your assignment and the date, time and location of the class or classes you must attend.
