Bright lights can disorient turtles.  To help protect turtles from bright lights, Volusia County has developed a Beach Lighting Management Plan and is working with our ocean front property owners to reduce lighting problems along our beaches. Volusia County's Mainland High School won a Certificate of Meritorious Achievement from the  National Medal of Technology Program for their research involving the adaptation of light meters to help resolve the problem of light pollution on the ecosystems of endangered sea turtles.
